Insulated packaging made from natural and sustainable wool fibres is efficient for keeping chilled, frozen and temperature sensitive products within the required temperature range, with the potential to out-perform polystyrene and polyethylene insulated packaging.
Developed by woolcool®, this insulated packaging was originally developed to deliver fresh food products at a temperature below 5°C within a minimum of 24hours. woolcool® was conceived and designed as a natural and renewable alternative to the polystyrene and polyethylene solutions currently used for insulated packaging. The National Trust approached Angela Morris on behalf of their tenant farmers who wanted more appropriate, 'eco-packaging' to deliver fresh meat and chilled produce direct to the consumer. The subsequent woolcool® product is made from 100% sheep's wool, naturally felted and sealed in perforated recyclable food-grade wraps to create insulating liners for a range of packaging applications.
Potential uses include food, pharmaceutical and horticultural applications.

Potential Benefits

Made from 100% pure wool, woolcool® insulation is sustainable, renewable, biodegradable, compostable and recyclable.  It creates a safe, highly effective and consistent insulation for a wide range of temperature sensitive products.

Intellectual Property

woolcool® is constantly being developed with Patents Pending for further products using the inherent properties of this ‘natural smart fibre’.

Consultant View

It is rare that a "new" packaging material reaches the market. Perhaps there are other natural materials that could provide effective and sustainable packaging solutions.
