Details

The Variopac Pro TFS 70 was introduced by Krones at PACK EXPO in November 2010. It delivers nested pack configurations. Nested packaging means that the containers are no longer packed in a linear configuration, but are each offset by half a bottle diameter to create the transport packaging. For example, four bottles in a row can be offset by half a bottle diameter from the next row (as shown in the image accompanying this entry), or the formation can be composed of alternate three- and four-bottle rows. The Variopack operates at speeds of 30-100 packs per minute.

Potential Benefits

The collations created by this nesting arrangement are more stable than when bottles are collated linearly, side-by-side. As a consequence, they do not necessarily need a pad or a tray, or thinner collation film can be used. The space requirement on the pallet is up to 15 percent smaller, depending on the particular formation involved. The layer pattern on the pallet exhibits enhanced stability, which is why the amount of pallet wrapping can be reduced.

The Intellectual Property for the Variopac machine is owned by Krones .

Consultant View

As well as improving cube utilisation, this approach to configuring product provides the opportunity to eliminate some packaging items. Although the Krones machinery is specific to beverages, the nesting concept can be applied to any bottled products, such as bottled food stuffs, household cleaning products and DIY products.
