Details

A paper manufacturer claimed to have launched the first ever 100% recycled label stock for the packaging market.

The stock has high bulk for excellent machinability, a one-sided stain coating to ensure high print quality and it is suitable for food contact applications. The supplier manufactures the label stock from de-inked pulp produced on site without the use of chemical agents or bleaches.
The stock was developed in response to customer demands for a 100% recycled content, high quality label in a natural shade. It helps users to label their packaging as having 100% recycled content, where all other components are made from recycled but previously labels would contain virgin material.
The label is part of Arjo Wiggins Maine 1 Face range, and is branded as Maine 1 Face Natural.
The content in this entry has been obtained from publicly available information sources only (e.g. press releases, website and trade press articles) and is subject to completion of a validation process with the technology supplier.

Potential Benefits

As well as allowing users to mark packaging materials as having 100% recycled content including the label, the manufacturers claim that production of this stock, when compared to virgin fibre labels, uses 50% less water and 60% less energy, resulting in 30% less CO2 emissions.

Intellectual Property

This is a proprietary brand manufactured solely by Arjo Wiggins.

Consultant View

There are a number of initiatives underway to reduce the environmental impacts of labelling stock. This is the first 100% label stock on the market, but other suppliers are likely to follow suit. There are also a number of initiatives underway to promote recycling of label release liner paper. Users of labels should keep a track of market developments and also try searching the REID database for other label-related innovations using search terms such as “labels” and “labelling”.
