A film manufacturer has developed a unique film which provides the optimum balance between humidity control and O2 and CO2 permeability. The permeability is temperature dependant so that the perfect atmosphere is maintained inside the pack even if the storage temperature is variable.
The package atmosphere is maintained with the optimum balance of atmospheric gases to prevent degradation. There is no condensation inside the film and the product does not dry out. The subsequent internal package atmosphere is not conducive to mould or bacteria growth.
Shelf life extension of several days and more is achieved for many products. The film is suitable for all types of vegetables including salads as well as many types of fresh fruit.
The film, which is a fully compostable, natural bio-polymer, has been developed by the Sirane company and is marketed as Sira-Flex Resolve.
The content in this entry has been obtained from publicly available information sources only (e.g. press releases, website and trade press articles) and is subject to completion of a validation process with the technology supplier.

Potential Benefits

SHelf-life extension is a particular issue in the international export business. Fruit and vegetables are shipped globally. Many are grown in hotter climates then shipped to cooler regions for consumption. Temperature dependent film permeability is an innovative approach to reducing product spoilage in the supply chain and subsequently in the home. The manufacturers report shelf-life extension of four dys for potatoes, with significant results for other fruit and vegetables as well.
