The manufacturer has developed a range of plastic film pouches which are water soluble and dissolve with no residual taste or odour.  It is intended that the new pouch is used with products such as porridge and coffee where the consumer adds hot milk or water to a container containing the pouch. The pouch then completely dissolves and the product is ready to eat or drink.  Other food and drink applications include cereals and soups. The product dissolves rapidly in hot liquids but can also be used with cold liquids.
The manufacturer states that the new pouch has excellent robust mechanical properties, low oxygen transmission rates, good transparency and can be converted using existing technologies.  The resulting pouch can also be printed on.
The new pouches will need to be contained in secondary packaging to prevent moisture causing premature activation in transit or storage.
The new edible pouches have been developed and marketed by MonoSol in the USA.
The content in this entry has been obtained from publicly available information sources only (e.g. press releases, website and trade press articles) and is subject to completion of a validation process with the technology supplier.

Potential Benefits

The greatest benefit of this innovation is the prospect of completely removing some plastic film from the waste chain. Although the new film has to be stored in non-soluble secondary packaging the primary packaging can be completely dissolved and consumed with the product.

Intellectual Property

Monosol has a patent pending on its edible film technology.

Consultant View

This innovation has great potential to remove primary packaging film from the supply chain.  Although it has certain drawbacks (it has to be held in non-soluble secondary packaging) for specific applications this product offers a significant advantage over existing packaging formats.  However, it remains to be seen how consumers percieve the prospect of eating or drinking primary packaging.
