The new technology has been developed in order to offer consumers a tactile experience for a range of packaging solutions.
The textured effect is created with Helioflex printing technology, which provides a textured surface. The initial range of coatings currently offers surface finishes with the feel of metal, stone, cloth, wood or skin.  In due course the range will be extended to include over 26 different effects, the company says.

A 3D-effect can also be obtained by a special outer varnish that enhances and boosts the printing volume. The process is compatible with all types of films. The operation is carried out with great precision, within a few tenths of a millimetre, ensuring that the resulting finish is very subtle.
The manufacturer has also developed a new range of films. A white satin dyed GPET referenced film completely masks the plastic aspect of the sleeve and gives it a density and feel identical to that of paper. Despite this change of material, the procedure promises to retain all the features, such as its retraction curve. With an 80% differential in diameter, for instance it can cover a bottle of champagne in its entirety.
The SKINSLEEVER® tactile varnish effects have been developed by Sleever International of France.

Potential Benefits

The greatest benefit of this technology is in enhancing the consumer experience of various types of packaging without the need to use expensive or impractical materials or reducing the recyclability of the packaging by mising materials.  The resulting finish can be used to convey product quality messages as well as offering enhanced handling characteristics.

Consultant View

This surface treatment offers an innovative way to provide consumers with a variety of tactile packaging options without the need to use expensive, scarce resources such as metals, and without recuing the recyclability of the packaging by mixing materials.  Additionally, the resulting finishes may offer enhanced handling characteristics for consumers.
