Details

This manufacturer has designed and developed a range of pallets made from lightweight plastics.  The pallets offer considerable weight advantages over existing wooden alternatives being around 4Kg in weight compared to a traditional wooden pallet which weighs around 30Kg.  Additionally, being made of plastic, they are easy to clean and avoid the infestation issues associated with use of wooden pallets, both of which are important factors in food and drink applications. Perhaps the best feature of their design lies in the ability to "nest" or stack the pallets.  This offers a significant advantage over wooden alternatives as available vehicle space and weight is optimised after a load has been delivered to accomodate subsquent loads. Despite being very light weight, the manufacturer states that the new pallets have proven load carrying capacities which are similar to traditional pallets.
 
The design also incorporates user-friendly hand grips to facilitate manual stacking of empty pallets, and a variety of holes and slots in the pallet base to accomodate various methods of load restraint.
 
The CPP range of plastic pallets has been developed and manufactured exclusively by Cabka plastic pallets.

Potential Benefits

The new pallet has a number of design features which make it superior to traditional wooden pallets.  However, the greatest benefit from this technology stems from the light weight of the pallet.  This yields benefits in terms of CO2 reduction as vehicles have less weight to pull.  The stackability of the product also frees up floor space in vehicles which permits larger back loads to be carried.
 
There are also health and safety benefits of the light weight design in terms of improved manual handling characteristics and the reduced possibility of issues such as back strains on employees.

Consultant View

This innovation has good potential to reduce the weight of loads in transit with a consequent benefit in CO2 reduction arising from distribution operations. Additionally the ability to stack empty pallets frees up floor space which is a very useful attribute in warehouse and transport operations.  There are other plastic pallets available on the market and researchers are advised to search information sources for similar technologies.  Within the REID database there are some interesting alternative pallet options including light weight pallets made from paper which might also be of interest.
