This technology meets the increasing demand for food packaging solutions that uphold high product hygiene throughout production and offer tight and user-friendly closure systems which secure the freshness of the products at the store and at home. 
 
The packaging design eliminates the need for an aluminium sealing layer by utilizing a combined Polypropylene (PP) lid and PP seal. By offering a pure PP sealing solution the need for the aluminum layer to provide an hermetic seal is eliminated, reducing materials usage, optimizing production efficiency, lowering packaging waste fees and expanding opportunities for recycling. With no aluminum foil, production is simplified and potential costs for separate stations and costs for aluminum foil are cut. At the same time, an ultra thin lid seal area allows for short sealing time and low sealing temperatures. Finally, the product can be pasteurized directly in the package which withstands autoclaving and hot filling.

The solution, known as 1 Seal, is manufactured by Arta Plast AB of Sweden.

Potential Benefits

The main benefit of this technology is the elimination of a whole level of packaging material through innovative use of polypropylene to form the whole pack. This completely removes the need for an aluminium seal which in turn simplifies the manufacturing process and improves the recyclability of the empty pack at the end of its life cycle.  Additionally, there is increased potential to avoid food waste through spoilage as the new pack facilitates product pasteurization within the pack.

Consultant View

This is another good example of the benefits which can be derived from revisiting well established packaging formats.  In this case simplifying the packaging by using 100% Polypropylene has yielded benefits in terms of improved recyclability and enhanced food safety characteristics whilst simplifying the manufacturing process, cutting costs and reducing materials used.
