Details

The new pack has been developed using technology based on a unique and specially developed absorbent, which absorbs and retains excess moisture within the food package without drying out the product. This locks away excess moisture and spoilage organisms away from contact with the cut fruit as the absorbent gels the moisture, consequently restricting the ability of the organisms to re-produce and re-contaminate the surface of the fruit. This leads to an extended product shelf life for fresh-cut tomatoes, cucumbers, melons, pineapples, onions etc.

FRESH-R-PAXTM ensures the cut fruit pieces do not sit in their own juice which not only causes the fruit to lose its colour and go translucent, but also causes the pieces to lose their texture and become soggy. Also by restricting the ability of spoilage microorganisms to reproduce and re-contaminate the surface of the fruit FRESH-R-PAXTM dramatically lowers mould log counts which not only improve quality but leads to an extended shelf life.
The new pouches have been developed by Maxwell Chase Technologies LLC.

Potential Benefits

The greatest benefit of this new pack is the potential to extend product quality and shelf life through absorbsion of excess moisture.  This has goof potential to reduce food spoilage.
 
The product can be used for any cut fruit or vegetable which on processing releases significant amounts of excess liquid/juice on being processed (cut/sliced/diced).

Fresh-R-Pax has been granted the followed patents: 6376034B1 & 2336827 and has a number of patents pending.

Consultant View

The new pack offers a relatively simple solution to the issue of moisture control in packs of fresh cut fruit and vegetables.  With the trend towards smaller households and consumers demanding smaller pack sizes this technology has the potential to offer good reductions in food waste caused through spoilage.
