Details

The packaging manufacturer has  targeted the UHT milk segment with a lightweight, recyclable closure specifically for its slimline cartons. In addition, all the packaging components can be recycled after use.  The new closure consists of a flange with an integrated cutting ring and a screw cap.  It only weighs 1.85g. As a comparison, the first screw cap developed by the manufacturer for aseptic beverage cartons weighed 4.9g, so the new cap represents a significantly lighter alternative.

The light-weighting has been achieved due to the innovative structural design of the cap; the flange, cutting ring and cap which are moulded as one piece.The closure can be applied to cartons using existing applicators which require only minor adjustments to accomodate the new cap. The reduced weight equates to a useful raw material saving.

The new CombiSwift cap has been developed by SIG Combiblock.

Potential Benefits

The benefits of this new cap are:
  • Packaging material reduction, and therefore an associated reduction in the carbon impact of the component;
  • Consequently, reduction of waste packaging at the end of life;
  • Improved recyclability of the packaging component.

Consultant View

This manufacturer has developed an innovative light-weight cap design which has significantly reduced the amount of plastic material used in this component of a UHT Milk carton. Similar innovations should enable light-weighting of other packaging formats in other sectors.  Researchers are advised to search the REID database for other examples of innovative design and light-weighting using search terms such as "light-weighting" and "packaging reduction".
