Details

This flexible packaging format replaces traditional ready meal packaging formats such as thermoformed trays. The pouch is made from a  special high-clarity polyester/polypropylene laminate, which has been sourced to ensure microwave and refrigeration compatibility. The transparent nature of the pack means the consumer has a full view of the product being purchased.

Each pouch is surface printed with special microwave-compatible inks, which are then sealed with a combination lacquer that both protects the ink and gives the matt finish required. In addition, they are laser micro-perforated to allow the ingredients to respire, maintaining the quality of the product on-shelf whilst the laser- scored easy-tear opening offers maximum customer convenience.

Potential Benefits

The pouches, used for all the Fresh Tastes range, are 60 per cent lighter then a tray and will help ASDA to meet its packaging reduction targets.

Intellectual Property

The pouches have been designed and implemented by Gilchrist, part of Sun Branding Solutions.

Consultant View

At just 8g per pack, this solution achieves significant material reduction compared to ready meal components packed in trays with a sleeve, whilst also offering additional consumer benefits such as full transparency and easy-opening.
